Saturday morning, 13 August, 2005, I arrived to find 4 teens and parents trimming trees and hauling the branches off to a debris pile.  I started taking pictures and asking questions, but sort of found it hard to get them to stop long enough to interview.  Finally I was able to "steal" them, one at a time, for gathering information.  I quickly realized that this is a really special group of young people.  They know what they are doing and the passion for life shows.  We don't have to worry about young folks like these, as they make the future look good.

All four youth are currently on or in previous years have been on staff for a sectional 4-H leadership conference called Creating A Leader Conference.  Kristen will be the head chair again this year and Jennifer Coe will co-chair.

Individually

Kristen Lee, 16, organized this work weekend at the Ranch.  A 4-H regional conference was in the area and a few dozen of the 4H members were out here last Feb.  Kristen wanted to return and was able to recruit her family and friends to help.  She hopes to make this an annual service project and open to 4-H'ers around the state.  Kristen will be the president of the local club this year with her sister, Gina, as a vice president.  She is the teen leader for Cultural Foods and the Nutrition Project in the local club.  Kristen wants to study international business in college and see where that takes her.  She loves to read and participates in the mock trial program at her school in the San Jose area.

Jennifer Coe, 15, is in 4-H leadership, theatre arts, cultural foods projects.  She is interested in medicine and hopes to become a MD.  She describes herself as being humorous, quirky and nice.  She loves to travel and has visited Western Europe.  She enjoys community service and finds it gratifying to work and bond with others.

Gina Lee, 14, loves crafts, is the teen leader for the Craft Project in her club.  She already knows how to crochet and knit and macrame.  She enjoys languages and is currently studying Spanish and wants to improve her sign language too.  He goal is to own a horse ranch to provide riding for the handicapped.  She has visited England and Italy.  Gina loves to play the guitar and sing.

Scott McCalla, 15, is in the electronics, Space Science, and cooking projects  (In 2001, Scott’s Space Science project sent experiments up on Discovery STS-102 as part of NASA’s SEM project and he was present at the launch!)   In his travels to Australia and New Zealand, Scott found a new goal in life which is to produce his own record label  featuring Indie music.  Scott has been a member of Country Centre 4H in Sacramento for the past eight years and will serve as club president this year.  At the 4-H State Leadership Conference in August, 2005, Scott was awarded the 4-H Golden Clover Award for his collaboration with community service groups.  In his junior year, Scott will participate in AP Calculus, AP Java, and Mathletes.

The log throwing contest

Gina is unloading the truck and giving the log her best throw at the McFarland Ranch

Gina, that is her log in the upper left

Jennifer is in great log throwing form. That is her log just barely visible in the upper left corner of the picture. This is volunteer work at the McFarland Living History Ranch.

Jennifer in great form.  Her log is just visible at the upper left.

The photo doesn't catch Kristen's log because she threw it so hard. Some of the "play" while volunteering at the McFarland Ranch in Gat, California.

Kristen, her log is long gone

Scott was easily the winner of this one. This is typical of volunteer work at the McFarland Ranch in Galt, CA.

Scott, an easy winner.

First, I want to make it very clear that no windows were actually broken by errant logs.  I am not sure if they had more fun than I did with this one.
