The Galt Area Historical Society is an active and progressive organization that not only preserves the past for future generations but also takes on enormous projects such as the McFarland Living History Ranch, the Rae House Museum, and the Liberty Cemetery. The Society's membership is made up of people of all ages from young to the young-at-heart. Believe you me, the young-at-heart run circles around me. It is an amazing group of people, folks I am proud to be part. It is the first time in my life I have purposefully became active in an organization because it is something I believe strongly in, preserving our past so that my children, my children's children and future generations of all families know the "roots" of our beautiful city, Galt. With pride, my husband George and I became lifetime members of the Galt Area Historical Society.

Watching our members putting more hours into these projects than a normal work week requires, and still have smiles on their faces at the end of the day is one of the reasons we have chosen to dedicate the rest of our lives  to the McFarland Living History Ranch. In addition, the biggest reason we have become caretakers of the ranch, is watching the children from area schools visit on field trips look in awe at the Ranch. These children grow to love agriculture, learn to love and respect life, but above all else their curious natures are sparked with a love of history, a spark that could never be found in a textbook. I work at the local newspaper as a reporter, The Galt Herald.  

One of the first stories I covered four years ago was a story at McFarland Ranch. As years went by, I would meet these same children in the grocery store or at school and they would relate, with the same spark in their eyes the memories and what they had learned at the Ranch. Hands-on learning lives in their hearts and minds forever. Giving to their community helps, the children feel part of their community. I remember as a high school student hearing many students say they couldn't wait to get out of this town. Feeling a part of the community will help make it feel like they belong. Many of us when we came to our senses returned later because of the great schools and the wonderful town.  

One day the opportunity presented itself to live on the ranch and help bring it to fruition. What better place to spend the rest of our lives.
